On Saturday 2 December at 11am at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West London, the GAA in London and Britain will be holding a commemoration service in memory of one of the seven founders of the Gaelic Athletic Association: John McKay.
McKay was the first joint-secretary of the fledgling association, signed into being in the Billiards Room of Hayes’ Commercial Hotel in Thurles, Co. Tipperary. A driver of athletics in Cork, he was a distinguised journalist with the Cork Examiner and later the Irish News in Belfast before moving to Dublin and then London in 1916.
John McKay died on 2 December 1923, on Saturday we mark 100 years since his passing.
The event is open to all who wish to attend – 679-681 Harrow Rd, London NW10 5NU (nearest Underground/Overground Station is Kensal Green), our own Warwickshire Treasurer Michael Walker will lay a commemorative wreath during the ceremony.
