Erin go Bragh are champions at last
Erin go Bragh 2-07 v 1-06 John Mitchel’s (Second Replay)
Erin go Bragh are Warwickshire football champions for the first time in their thirty-year history following their 2-7 to 1-6 victory over John Mitchel’s in the final at Glebe Farm Park.
It was the second replay between these sides and on this occasion Erin go Bragh earned the spoils with a devestating second-half display. Trailing by a point at the interval, 1-4 to 1-3, Erin go Bragh played fast open football in the second-half that saw Mitchel’s run ragged by the end.
It didn’t look like turning out that way early in the second-half when Mitchel’s added two quick points but they failed to score for the remainder of the game, whereas Erin go Bragh continued to improve. Points from Paul Higgins and Brendan McCarthy set Erin go Bragh on the road to victory and a goal by John Byrne put them ahead for the first time in the game.
It was obvious that Damien Sheridan, who had been injured a few weeks ago, was not at full fitness at full-back for Mitchel’s but, by the end, Erin go Bragh were deserving winners on the greatest day in the club’s history. It was a great team victory for the new champions with all fifteen contributing nobly. Best for the losers were Eamon Sheridan and Aidan Smith.
